RDL Volunteers to Clear Huha’s New Wellington Site
RDL Group has started the first phase of works at the
new Wellington region HUHA (Helping You Help Animals)
sanctuary site on Haywards Hill Road.
The 157acre site on Haywards Hill Road was purchased by HUHA in May this year on the back of a long fundraising campaign after their shelter in Otaki was sold and is due to be demolished to make way for a quarry.
The build and purchase of land is propelled solely by community support and donations. RDL Group is one of a strong group of local businesses donating time and resource to the important venture.
HUHA’s vision is modest, but their intention is to make a large impact on animal welfare outcomes in our communities.
They plan to create fit-for-purpose cabin-like buildings, surrounded by enrichment yards, walking tracks and nature. Community involvement is key.
Once built, the new sanctuary will house homeless and rescued animals, providing a safe place for rehabilitation, care and education before re-homing in the community.
HUHA Co-founder Carolyn Press-McKenzie says that “Our goal is to build a facility that is safe and healing not just for animals, but also for individual and families in the surrounding communities, who will have the opportunity to get personally involved.”
“It’s been such a
whirl-wind ride to get this far, and we’ve got a lot of
work ahead of us.
We’d love to hear from local
businesses in our community who could lend a hand to help
build our new sanctuary.”
“We own the land, and RDL are donating the huge task of site preparation, but we still need to raise more funds to complete the build.”
“We need monetary donations as well as donated services, supplies and ongoing sponsorship and support to ensure that we can continue our momentum and save more animals across the Wellington region and throughout NZ”
