Wellington Sky Show set for Saturday 4 Nov
Ensure you have a prime view of the harbour this Saturday 4 November for New Zealand’s largest annual fireworks display – Wellington Sky Show.
The famed Sky Show, which is put on by Wellington City Council with support from CentrePort, starts with a bang at 9pm and will be best viewed from the central city waterfront.
Family-friendly carnival attractions will be at Waitangi Park all weekend and food trucks will serve food along the waterfront from 5pm Saturday.
Wellington Acting Mayor Jill Day says Wellington’s hills and harbour are known for being one of the best places in the world to watch large fireworks displays.
“How many cities have
such a high proportion of properties, lookouts and publicly
accessible waterfront that look out over a central
harbour?
“We’re fortunate that Wellington city is
such a beautiful, grand-scale natural arena.”
The
event is very popular with Wellingtonians of all ages, so it
is recommended to show up early and ensure a good viewing
spot.
To avoid traffic congestion, it is also recommended
people walk, bike or use public transport when possible.
Check www.metlink.org.nz for details.
The Council invites
people to share Sky Show photos, videos and thoughts on
social media sites using the hashtag #skyshow17.
It will be the last November Sky Show before the event shifts to the less-windy, mid-year Matariki celebrations, with a family-oriented early-evening start time.
The annual fireworks display is created and run by PyroStar International. PyroStar has been responsible for some of the world’s most spectacular and memorable pyrotechnic events including the Sydney Olympics, millennium celebrations in London, and the Hong Kong Handover.
The display will
be choreographed with recorded music from Wellington artists
Drax Project, Toni Huata, Groeni, Orchestra of Spheres, Dan
Adams, David Downes, and The Quincy Conserve.
Sky Show
audiences can tune in to the soundtrack on the Breeze (94.1
and 98.5FM) or MORE FM (99.7 and 95.3FM) which will be
simulcast from 9pm. To avoid sound delays use FM radio
rather than streaming.
Steve and Kath from The Breeze
will also broadcast live from the waterfront 7-9pm, More FM
will be painting children’s faces with glow in the dark UV
paint, and The Edge will be giving away glowing candy as it
starts to get dark.
Authorities remind residents
that the event is in a liquor-ban area and that setting off
fireworks in a public place in a finable offence.
The
fireworks will go ahead rain or shine but could be postponed
by high winds to Sunday 5 November at 9pm. For live updates,
check Wellington City Council’s Facebook page.
See wellington.govt.nz/skyshow for the traffic management map, and www.metlink.org.nz for live public transport information.
