Service of Victoria Cross recipients to be marked this Armistice Day
Six more Palmerston North streets will have the red poppy added to their street signs this Armistice Day, marking the significance of their names.
All six streets lie around Rangiora Avenue and bear the name of New Zealand Victoria Cross recipients - Upham, Ngarimu, Hulme, Hinton, Andrew and Elliott. The streets were developed immediately after World War II.
The addition of the poppies is part of the Places of Remembrance project run by the New Zealand Poppy Places Trust.
The trust is identifying places in New Zealand that have a link to our military involvement in a conflict or operational service overseas.
A final 10 Palmerton North streets and places are to be added in 2018, bringing the total number of Poppy Places in the city to 31.
An invitation is extended to the public to join the Poppy Places Trust and Mayor Grant Smith at 12pm on 11 November at the Palmerston North Conference & Function Centre to mark the addition of the poppy to the six streets. Refreshments will be served at this event.
The Armistice Day Service will be held at 11am at the Cenotaph in The Square to remember the signing of an armistice between Germany and the Allied Powers on 11 November 1918. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, the guns fell silent.
Group Captain Nick Olney, Base Commander at RNZAF Base Ohakea, will give the address.
