Golden Bay Grand Stand Community Trust Proposal
The Golden Bay Grand Stand Community Trust (the Trust) will today submit a proposal to Tasman District Council (TDC), which offers a cost neutral (to TDC) plan to retain the historic grandstand at the Takaka Recreation Grounds, with the Trust to gain tenure of the building and be responsible for maintenance and restoration works. A conservation plan for the building prepared by Architect and Conservator Ian Bowman, and report on the conservation work by engineer Peter Smith are part of the proposal.
Ian Bowman writes:
‘..the building has high rarity values as one of five known grandstand buildings built prior to 1900 still standing on its original site.’
Peter Smith writes:
‘Inspection finds some confidence that the extent of any deterioration is modest.’
The building already stands at 45% NBS, and after 118 years levels taken around the foundations are within 6mm.
