Last chance for lowincome families get free curtains for their homes
Wellington Curtain Bank is closing for the summer shortly and urging people on low incomes to get in quick for curtains.
The Curtain Bank provides free, lined curtains to families with a Community Services Card who don’t already have them.
Sustainability Trust’s Healthy Homes Manager Miranda Struthers says curtains are one of the most effective ways to keep heat inside the home, keeping people healthier and power bills down.
“It’s a small but important change to make if people are working to make their homes warmer and drier. People who are renting in particular often have little control over the warmth of their home, so curtains can really help.”
The Curtain Bank will be closing on November 30 and any orders received after November 16 may not be processed until the Curtain Bank reopens in March.
Upper Hutt mum Hayley, who lives with her partner and their 18monthold, got curtains from Wellington Curtain Bank last year.
“Our house was cold due to thin curtains and ranch slider doors, heat was escaping through the windows. The curtains got wet and mouldy even when aired out,” says Hayley.
“I was conscious that it wouldn't be good for our health due to a newborn baby and my husband going through cancer treatment.
“It was really nice to get curtains from the Curtain Bank as people put their time into helping others.
“This winter was a lot better with the curtains as our house felt warmer, like heat isn't just going out the glass, as they are double layered and thick.”
The curtains are upcycled from curtains and fabric donated by the public, made to measure and lined before they go out to families.
Any Community Services Card holder can get free curtains from the Curtain Bank between March and November.
