Mt Ruapehu staff show how to be tidy Kiwis

Ski field staff get into the spirit of Conservation Week

MT RUAPEHU 20 OCTOBER 2017: Mt Ruapehu staff got right into the spirit of Conservation Week filling up the back of a ute with rubbish from not so tidy Kiwis.

And that was only on the Whakapapa side of the mountain. On Monday the clean up teams picked up rubbish along the mountain roads from the top to bottom of the Bruce Road and Ohakune Mountain Road, with the clean up on the Whakapapa side collecting 1.5 cubic metres of rubbish, enough to fill a ute. On the Turoa side a further 1 cubic meter of rubbish was picked up.

Ruapehu Alpine Lifts (RAL) General Manager – People & Performance, Andy Hoyle says, "We are working together with other organisations, including the Department of Conservation and Ruapehu District Council in Tongariro National Park to look after our environment by doing simple, practical and affordable missions to clean it up and keep it clean.

"It’s not just about the Tongariro National Park either, it’s a really good reminder to all Kiwis to look after their own backyards.”

To further enhance the conservation message Mt Ruapehu featured a video on Facebook this week about its on-mountain recycling programme encouraging visitors to use the correct rubbish bins to correctly sort recyclables.

Mt Ruapehu also ran a social media competition asking people to share a pic of themselves enjoying a hot drink up the maunga this week using a reusable mug, on their own Facebook or Instagram to go in the draw with tags #LoveMtRuapehu & @mtruapehu & @dragonausnz. There is also a conservation themed promotion running at Turoa where customers receive a free coffee with any Keepcup purchase and 50c off all coffees where a reusable cup is used.

Conservation Week runs until Sunday 22 October.
