Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a Wellington safety hero!
Nominations are now open for the 2017 Safety in the City awards – recognising every day super heroes that live amongst
us.
The awards acknowledge and celebrate individuals, groups, programmes and exceptional safety heroes that are making
outstanding contributions to the safety of our community.
Mayor Justin Lester says if you know an individual, group or programme that fits that bill, we want to hear from you.
“Over the years, we’ve honoured heroes from all walks of life and for all sorts of acts of bravery, emergency responses,
crime prevention, and community safety campaigns and initiatives – but one thing they all have in common is they all
deserved the recognition.
“The nominees and winners of this award are not only selfless, dedicated and brave, but have also jointly contributed to
us maintaining our World Health Organisation International Safe Community designation since 2000,” adds the Mayor.
Previous winners of Safety in the City awards include one-off incidents and longer term actions like:
- A volunteer who initiated a programme to reduce alcohol-related harm
- Walking and cycling safety advocates
- A man who saved a drowning girl
- A young girl who called an ambulance for her mother
- Professional lifesavers
- Community patrols
The Safety in the City awards will be presented and celebrated during a ceremony held at Te Wharewaka o Pōneke on
Tuesday 28 November 2017.

• description of what they did or do
• a short biography
