Palmy Rocks Plans to Rock The Square
Palmy Rocks plans to rock The Square
Palmy Rocks is calling for all local rock painters and collectors to bring as many rocks as possible down to The Square for the Rhythm n Rocks event on Saturday 4 November to celebrate the wonderful artists and diversity of Palmy Rocks.
The event, which will take place from 2pm to 4pm, will be centred on creating a large koru of painted rocks.
Event organisers, Palmy Dirty 30 and Palmy Unleashed are encouraging as many people to contribute as possible.
“We’ve a pretty good gauge of the number of Palmy folk painting and hiding rocks, but we have not been able to get a handle on how many rocks have actually been created and shared with the community. So, we’ve decided to get everyone together to make an amazing piece of temporary art and essentially do a rock count at the same time. How many Palmy Rocks have been created in the last 14 months? Your guess is as good as mine!” says Heather Knox, founder of Palmy Rocks and Palmy Dirty 30.
Rhythm n Rocks will provide an opportunity for amateur and professional artists to create a unique piece of community art while enjoying an outdoor concert. The event will include musical accompaniment from local band The Cohibas and everyone who brings rocks along to be counted and added to the koru will go into the draw to win spot prizes from a range of local organisations including the Palmerston North Scenic Railway, Flip City, The Lido and more.
“Through the creation of the koru, we’ll be putting together an art piece that showcases the art work of everyone involved with Palmy Rocks -– old, young, professional and amateur – to truly celebrate the great depth of creative talent and diversity that exists in our city.”
“Also, as the koru grows during the event, the goal is that it will show that small actions, when multiplied up by lots of people, can have a really big impact,” says Knox.
“All rocks are welcome – as long as they are painted! So, please, everyone, put your best art onto some rocks and bring them down to The Square. The event isn’t just open to individuals though. Palmy Rocks has always welcomed local businesses and community groups to join in as well. We’re all part of what makes Palmy great,” says Knox.
The event organisers also encourage those with collections of rocks at home to bring them along.
All rocks that are contributed to the koru will be released into a range of Palmerston North parks and reserves during November and December to ensure the hiding and hunting continues through summer.
Rhythm n Rocks is one of the many events that will be supported by Palmy Unleashed over the coming months. Palmy Unleashed is a new PNCC initiative focussed on bringing public spaces in the CBD to life through community run events and activations.
“We’re stoked to have Palmy Unleashed support for the event too. It’s been pretty straightforward in getting things sorted with them. We’d highly recommend that anyone who’s got an idea for an off the wall event gets in touch with the Palmy Unleashed team to help make it happen,” says Knox.
The “Rhythm n Rocks” event runs from 2pm to 4pm on Saturday 4 November 2017 in The Square, Palmerston North. There will be a rock painting station in The Square from 1pm – 2pm before the koru making commences. Bring your rocks along by 3.30pm to be in to win a spot prize.
