‘Nature Watch Day’
As the school holidays draw to a close and the subsequent end of holiday blues start to creep into the family psyche,
Orokonui Ecosanctuary has the perfect way to end the holidays on a high note. As part of Conservation Week 2017 Orokonui
is hosting ‘Nature Watch’ this Sunday the 15th October.
High above Blueskin Bay sits an extraordinary visitor centre, complete with café and interactive educational facilities
that is surrounded by over 300 hectares of predator-fenced, lush NZ forest - protectively nurturing some of the rarest
species in New Zealand and indeed the world.
A comfortable 20 minute drive from Dunedin City, you and your family can get up close and personal to one of the most
ancient of species – the tuatara. This year’s Conservation Week theme is ‘Love your backyard,’ and many of us have
started to take an interest in what we can do to help our planet and our local plants and wildlife. This is what ‘Nature
Watch Day’ is all about – learning how to look after your own backyard, and the wider landscape.
Orokonui staff will be present to answer questions on how to make a difference to your little slice of paradise. Safe
bird food, control and regeneration and wish to share this knowledge with you and your family. The message is positive,
‘Love your Backyard’ so that we can all make a difference. Chris Baillie, General Manager at Orokonui says “Everyone can
help at different levels. We can look after our own backyard, our school or get involved in the Ecosanctuary. We can
support it politically, volunteer, donate, make a bequest, become a member. Every contribution makes a positive
difference.”
Entry is nearly half price for families and individuals this Sunday, and this reduced entry fee will be ongoing if you
purchase family membership – every little bit counts, and every little last moment of the school holidays is to be
