Aokautere Reservoir now
operational
Palmerston North City Council’s new
Aokautere reservoir and Turitea Road pumping station is now
operational. The $5.5 million dollar project forms part of
the Aokautere water supply upgrade.
Located in the hills behind Pacific Drive, the Aokautere reservoir provides a new gravity point of supply to the Aokautere and Linton areas, allowing for peak buffering and emergency supply.
The new reservoir increases the amount of treated water storage for the city, improves the resilience of supply and caters to the urban growth of Palmerston North.
Works included:
· Construction of a
2,500m3 steel reservoir (including land acquisition, which
allows for a second reservoir in future)
·
Construction of a reinforced concrete pump chamber
·
Installation of two horizontal booster pumps and associated
pipework
· Installation of a new
transformer
· A new connection point from the
water main in Turitea Road
The reservoir is designed
to withstand an earthquake and retain clean water for use
post – quake.
Reservoir depth sensors and flow meters
all operate using solar power.
In comparison to the old booster pump system, the new reservoir, pipelines and pumps are simple, reliable and cost less to operate.
The existing booster station will operate as a backup facility for the upper and central Aokautere area.
