Wellington region’s new buses getting ready to roll
Construction of Tranzit’s new bus fleet for the Wellington region is under way, with new high-tech, eco-friendly buses
to begin servicing the bulk of the region’s commuter routes from July next year.
Tranzit has Kiwi Bus Builders in Tauranga working at capacity to deliver 40 new buses, including 10 fully-electric
double-deckers, with a further 114 Optare MetroCity buses now being built in the United Kingdom.
The remainder of Tranzit’s new 234-strong Wellington region fleet is being built by BCI.
Tranzit managing director Paul Snelgrove said the new MetroCity buses were purpose-built to meet the demands of the
Wellington region’s commuter network.
“They’re top-of-the-line and exactly what we need to give the region’s commuters the very best service possible. As well
as being Euro 6 certified, which is the highest possible and newest global emissions standard, the MetroCity buses weigh
900kg less than comparable vehicles, use much less fuel and can carry more passengers.
“We’ve ordered a combination of 10.1m and 10.8m MetroCity buses, which means we’ll have the right buses available to
best service the mix of the city, suburban and semi-rural routes we’ll be operating. The shorter buses are much easier
to manoeuvre and are ideal for tight, twisty routes.”
The MetroCity buses will use the latest Mercedes Benz driveline technology, ensuring low emissions and high efficiency.
“Minimising the environmental impact of our new diesel fleet is a critical consideration for us,” said Snelgrove. “As
well as launching the first of our new fleet of fully-electric double-deckers from next year, our new diesel buses will
be the safest and greenest to have ever operated on Kiwi roads.”
Meanwhile, recruitment for new jobs with Tranzit is shifting into top gear.
“We’re going out to prospective drivers, mechanics and logistics people to show them first-hand what working for
Tranzit’s all about,” said Snelgrove.
“The level of interest we’re getting is amazing.”
