Often wet this week, but enjoy some midweek magic

As a low-pressure system moves across New Zealand today, most of the country will be on the receiving end of some wet weather accompanied by Watches and Warnings. But there is some respite in the weather for some places that will see sunshine mid-week.

Today the South Island will see rain with low cloud for eastern areas, and snow is expected down to around 700 to 800 metres. The Cardrona ski field was the lucky recipient of 18cm of snow overnight last night, which should please operators and patrons. Snow warnings have been issued for Arthur’s, Porters, Lewis and Lindis Passes, and rain watches and warnings currently cover much of southern and eastern areas. However, the west coast will see the best of the weather today and will remain mostly dry.

The North Island is set to receive showers in most places today, with conditions looking favourable for thunderstorms and hail across central and northern areas. In addition, a strong wind watch is in force for Northland, and this also increases the chance that Auckland will see strong southwest winds overnight, as a low crosses the upper North Island.
