ChristChurch Cathedral reclaims centre stage in the city

Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel has warmly welcomed the Anglican Synod’s decision to reinstate ChristChurch Cathedral as the heart and soul of the city.

The Mayor says the Council will now launch a Special Consultative Procedure with the Christchurch community regarding the city’s $10 million Cathedral funding pledge. Consultation, scheduled to start after the election, will consider the grant and the terms under which such a grant could be made.

“Christchurch again has a focal point as we unite to celebrate the restoration of a central landmark that bridges our colonial history as New Zealand’s first city established by Royal Charter in 1856,” the Mayor says.

“The decision strengthens our 161-year connection to the Cathedral and the Anglican Diocese of Christchurch.

“The vote of 55% for reinstatement reflects the fact that there has always been a divided view of the future of the Cathedral since the earthquakes.

“With the decision today, what has divided us can now unite us. We know the decision and we can now move on.”

The Mayor has also highlighted the commitment and efforts of the Minister supporting Greater Christchurch Regeneration, Hon. Nicky Wagner.

“The Government’s generous offer has been integral to the successful outcome. But it is the cross-party support for legislation to fast-track the consenting requirements that gives the city the certainty we need.

“After years of debate and delays, ChristChurch Cathedral will once again take centre stage in our city and we can be united in purpose once more.”
