Transforming Hurstmere Road into a more people friendly space
Auckland Transport is seeking feedback on a proposed streetscape upgrade of Hurstmere Road in the heart of Takapuna.
The proposed revitalisation will transform the section of Hurstmere Road between Lake Road and Anzac Street into an open and vibrant destination, reducing vehicle dominance and increasing walking and cycling facilities.
The proposal features more public seating, better street lighting, more vibrant streetscaping and a new stormwater treatment system to remove pollutants from the water discharging to the beach.
This section of Hurstmere Road would become one-way for north-bound traffic with a 30km/h speed limit, with south-bound traffic redirected along Anzac Street and Lake Road.
A south-bound cycle lane will also be introduced, made with a different surfacing material to maintain clear separation from the general traffic lane.
David Nelson, AT’s Group Manager Major Capital says, “Our goal is simple - to create a more attractive open space that will better serve local residents, local businesses and visitors to Takapuna.
“The proposed design will not only improve the flow between the beach, Hurstmere Green and the surrounding shopping area, but also improve opportunities for people to walk, cycle, or use public transport to and from this popular area.
“It also aims to balance the needs of current users of the road with those of the wider community for the long term,” he says.
Devonport-Takapuna Local Board Chairman Grant Gillon, says, “This consultation is an important and exciting opportunity for the people of Takapuna to help shape the future look and function of their town centre.
“The proposal is certainly striking and it provides great environmental benefits for our beach which people will support. It’s encouraging to see Auckland Transport working with various arms of council to come up with innovative and sustainable options for improving Takapuna.
“I urge people to go online and look at what is being proposed, or to go speak in person to the project team at one of the two upcoming community sessions,” he says.
Anyone interested is invited to talk to the project team in person at BizDojo Takapuna (Partners Life House, 33-45 Hurstmere Road, Takapuna) at the following times:
• Thursday 14 September: 5.30pm – 7.30pm
• Thursday 21 September: 5.30pm – 7.30pm
