Bollards to protect unique natural environment
Almost 2.5km of bollards will be installed in Centennial Marine Drive along the Kopututea Reserve in an effort to
protect the dunes and prevent illegal dumping.
"The bollards have been planned as part of Council's co-management agreement with the Kopututea Trust," says contracts
and assets manager Garrett Blair.
"It's important to know that this work is not intended to restrict the community from enjoying this stretch of
beachfront, it's just changing the way we access this area to support the environment better."
Kopututea Reserve is privately owned by the Trust but open for access to the public through the agreement.
The Trust Chairman Pene Brown is keen to see this development take place too preserve the sensitive Dune enviroment that
Kopututea is.
Contractors began installing bollards yesterday (Monday 4 September) extending on the existing barriers located just
past the Pacific Street car park.
Two designated points for vehicles will remain available for access to the beachfront and sand collection.
The work will take approximately three weeks to complete and traffic management will be in place as contractors carry
out the installation in segments.
Council asks motorist to please respect speed limits in the area.
