Haig Road Bridge upgrade means safer access for locals

Council’s completed the $175k project to increase the weight capacity of the Haigs Access Bridge to over 44 tonne.

The 60 year old timber bridge was extensively damaged and until its recent replacement it could only accommodate a one tonne vehicle capacity.

“The bridge is now safer to use and provides access to a variety of vehicles.”

“This work is important for unlocking economic potential in the region,” says Tairawhiti Roads Journey Manager, Helen Harris.

The bridge now has a concrete deck and steel beams. The approaches to the bridge have also been rebuilt. The bridge now has an expected life span of 100 years.
Council contracted Bridge It NZ to design and construct upgrade.

This project was part of Council’s 2016/17 annual bridge and structure replacement programme.

The coming 2017/18 annual bridge and structure replacement programme will include: Mangamaunu Bridge on Tauwhareparae Road, Mangaoporo No1 Bridge at Mangaoporo Road and Culvert No2 on Bond Road.
