’Labour to open line ‘if sustainable’ 22ndrd August 2017 Gisborne Herald
Our Environment Centre (CEAC) support Labour’s announcement recently 22/8/17 “The Labour Party has said it will reopen the mothballed Gisborne to Napier rail line if elected in October, as long as evidence shows it would be sustainable.”
Our history with this rail line.
During the 2002 era, our Environment Centre fought very hard to save the Gisborne rail service when Tranzrail were about to close the Gisborne rail then.
We sent all four Council’s in the Gisborne/HB regions a submission to show some ‘token financial support’ to encourage Tranzrail to keep the line service open then.
GDC along with HBRC, HDC, and Napier city Council placed each a $250 000 a year contribution for a three years period into Tranzrail’s account to sustain the service.
In 2005 Tranzrail still kept the rail service going until Toll rail took it over.
GDC have a responsibility to make our roads safer by reducing truck freight on our roads and this was observed back then.
Thank goodness all opposition Parties now support our Gisborne rail for our security, health & wellbeing.
There must be a cost consideration of every life lost by accidents/deaths involving trucks as NZTA cost each road death now at $3.4 million dollars.
Also is the fact that rail is an “essential public service now as regarded in Auckland and elsewhere especially in remote provincial regions.
We now have the prospect if we elect them, to see our rail services restored finally after six long hard years of despair.
