Wellington Living Wage election forum tomorrow

Wellington Living Wage election forum tomorrow

Living Wage Movement Aotearoa New Zealand is hosting an election forum tomorrow (Wednesday 30 August) at St Peters on Willis.

In forums already held across the country, there has been a strong commitment from candidates to taking leadership on the Living Wage and to implementing the Living Wage in the core public sector workforce.

Hundreds of Wellingtonians representing many community organisations, faith groups and unions will gather to ask candidates from political parties to make these commitments tomorrow.

When:
Wednesday, 30 August
7 – 8.30pm

Where:
St Peter’s Anglican Church
211 Willis Street, CBD

Confirmed candidates attending:
Kelvin Davis (Labour Party)
Jan Logie (Green Party)
Tracey Martin (NZ First)
Mei Reedy-Taare (Maori Party)
TBC (National Party)

Directly- employed and contracted public service workers will be speaking about their experiences on low wages and why we need to address wages to fix poverty in New Zealand.

Living Wage Wellington community organiser Lyndy McIntyre says that the Living Wage Movement has already had success securing public commitments at election forums.

“At the local level, we’ve seen commitments from council candidates in election campaigns that have delivered real results for many of the lowest paid members of the council workforces,” she says.

“We need central government politicians to step up too. If politicians are serious about fixing our low wage economy then they need to lead the way as responsible employers. That means committing to the Living Wage for their workers both directly employed and those employed by contractors.”
