Mayoral statement regarding Labour’s Hospital announcement
Mayoral statement regarding Labour’s Dunedin Hospital announcement
Dunedin (Friday, 25 August 2017) – I welcome the Labour Party’s announcement today that it will start rebuilding Dunedin Hospital, in the central city, within its first term if elected to Government.
It is
clear that both the current National Government and the
Labour Party have heard our community’s demands for
Dunedin Hospital to be redeveloped as a top flight teaching
hospital in a central city location. I believe their
commitments also give recognition to the high level of
confidence in investing in our city.
We will work with
central government – whoever that may be following the
election – and other key stakeholders to help facilitate a
central city rebuild. We will be doing whatever we can to
represent the community’s voice in the discussions and
decisions which are at the heart of the city’s health,
economic and educational wellbeing.
The Dunedin City
Council has led the ‘Dunedin Hospital SOS’ campaign
since March, which calls on central government to commit to
redevelop the hospital as a top flight teaching hospital in
the central city. Over 6250 people, numerous organisations
and businesses, and mayors from throughout Otago/Southland
have backed the DCC-led SOS campaign.
