The Selwyn Foundation’s 2017 Ageing and Spirituality conference to focus on ‘Spiritual Leadership in Aged Care’
An exciting line-up of acclaimed speakers from New Zealand and Australia will present on the theme of ‘Spiritual
Leadership in Aged Care’ at The Selwyn Foundation’s 2017 Ageing and Spirituality conference on 1 September.
Hosted by the Foundation’s Selwyn Institute for Ageing and Spirituality, this unique and inspirational conference will
look at the many aspects of spirituality that are meaningful to the older person, with a focus on improving the quality
of interactions with others and on helping people to age well.
Keynote speakers will be Professor Bruce Stevens, Director of the Centre for Ageing and Pastoral Studies at Charles
Sturt University, Canberra, and Archbishop Emeritus Sir David Moxon KNZM, former Archbishop of the New Zealand Dioceses
of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia.
Professor Stevens will give two presentations – on ‘Life tasks: Towards a positive model for ageing' and ‘The
self-compassionate chaplain: Escaping the self-esteem trap’ (in which he will draw on his previous experiences as an
ordained minister in the Anglican Church).
Archbishop Emeritus Sir David Moxon KNZM will discuss spiritual icons, Pope Francis and the late Maori Queen Te Arikinui
Te Atairangikahu, and will look at opportunities for healthy and life-giving spirituality in the third age.
Topics will also include spiritual care in healthcare, pastoral care, self-care and mindfulness training and art therapy
in an aged care setting.
Dr Richard Egan of the Department of Preventive & Social Medicine, Dunedin School of Medicine, University of Otago, will also speak at the event, as will Dr Wendy
Wrapson, Senior Research Fellow within the National Institute for Public Health and Mental Health Research at Auckland
University of Technology.
The conference will be of interest to health and aged care workers, chaplains and pastoral caregivers, members of faith
organisations, academics and all those involved in caring for older people.
It will take place in the Selwyn Village Theatre (43 Target St, Point Chevalier, Auckland) from 8:30am – 4:30pm, on
Friday, 1 September 2017. Tickets are $175, which includes attendance at the conference, lunch, tea/coffee, conference
notes and delegates' satchel.
