New Central Otago/Lakes Schools’ Debating Championship
14 August 2017 - Public advocacy company ‘The Message’, in concert with the Cromwell Rotary Club, is organising and hosting the 2017 Central Otago Schools’ Debating Championship – and there has been an excellent response from secondary schools in the region.
The region’s four largest secondary schools have all entered senior (Y 11-13) and junior (Y 7-10) teams with Dunstan High School and Mt Aspiring College entering two senior and junior teams respectively. Other schools participating are Wakatipu High School and Cromwell College.
A Schools debating seminar is being hosted this Friday 18 August at Cromwell College for Central’s school debaters, coaches and teachers and will be run by former NZ Universities and New Zealand debating captain Michael Laws.
“ The skills that students learn from debating, prepare them for many professional careers and enhance their chances – from politics to broadcasting, from the law to public relations, from environmental advocacy to entertainment. The ability to speak in public, to develop a line of argument and then convince others … debating really does give students an amazing head start.”
The Schools Debating Tournament will be held on Sunday 27 August at Cromwell College with the Finals hosted by the Cromwell Rotary Club on Monday evening 28 August.
