The South Invercargill Urban Rejuvenation Trust (South Alive) is excited to announce a CALL FOR PROPOSALS for the SOUTH ALIVE COMMUNITY MURAL PROJECT, Living SOUTH / You Are Here.
South Alive is an urban rejuvenation and community building project that was established in 2012. Since then it has achieved significant transformation in the South Invercargill community including the renewal and upgrading of the main shopping area known as South City. As part of the upgrade, South Alive ran a national sculpture competition which resulted in a large scale work ‘Tale of Southland, Murihiku’ being installed in 2015 http://www.stuff.co.nz/southland-times/news/71349252/South-Invercargill-sculpture-officially-opened Also as part of the upgrade, South Alive constructed a community park, and has recently bought a 400m2 building to provide a community hub, out of which it is also operating a social enterprise business, The Pantry.
In a further urban art initiative that will pair artists and community, South Alive are now implementing a nationwide competition and calling for proposals for a mural design for the wall of the Community Hub building. The title of the mural project, Living SOUTH / You Are Here, indicates the theme for the mural design. Artists are encouraged to create a contemporary work that reflects the natural and physical elements of the region, the iconic landscape and geography and flora and fauna of Southland. A key feature of the project is community engagement, and the winning artist will facilitate hands-on community participation in painting the mural as part of the overall goal.
This is the first project in the South City Arts Strategy. The long term vision is an exciting plan that will add even more vibrancy to the South City shopping and community area by implementing and encouraging a wide range of art projects that contribute to developing an outdoor art-scape environment. In this first phase, a community mural project is considered to be a great way to engage the community and have immediate visual impact in the area.
The selected artist will guide the painting of a large-scale contemporary, original mural in partnership with the South Invercargill community.
The deadline for the proposals is Monday, 25 September, 2017.
