Sport Bay of Plenty to put a spring in the step of local women
August 7 2017: While winter seems to have only just kicked into gear, Sport Bay of Plenty is looking ahead to the start of spring with the launch of its Spring Starter Series for Women.
The series offers a number of low-cost and free activities to local women who are looking to shake off the winter blues and put that spring in their step ahead of the warmer months.
Run as four, five and six-week beginner’s blocks across the Western, Eastern and Central Bay of Plenty throughout September and October, the activities are tailored to suit all ages, abilities and fitness levels – it’s about trying something new and getting active with friends.
The options to choose from are varied: from golf and golf croquet, tennis and bootcamp classes, to mountain biking and yoga, dance fitness and even hula fitness.
The series is hosted by Sport Bay of Plenty’s Play in the Bay initiative, a project which aims to connect the community with low-cost, accessible ways to explore the region and get involved in sports and recreation.
Recreation Team Leader Sonia Lynds says last year’s inaugural programme was so successful that the organisation was keen to run the Spring Starter Series again, to help get more women active and discover a new hobby.
“Through the ActiveNZ survey we know that women are 20% less active than men. Many noted ‘Lack of Partner’ and ‘Unsure Where to Participate’ as barriers to participation. The Spring Starter Series directly addresses these by providing a selection of activities that support group participation, as well as a variety of opportunities across the Bay of Plenty to join in on.”
She says the activities are focused on beginner level so that women of all ages and abilities can join in and feel comfortable with trying something new, while meeting new friends and getting active.
Registrations are open now until Friday, August 25. Places are limited, so get in quick to avoid disappointment.
