The Emirates Melbourne Cup stops off in Christchurch
Canterbury locals will be able to witness racing’s most famous trophy, the Melbourne Cup, as it stops off at a fashion
event in the newly built ANZ Centre this Friday.
The trophy will arrive by tram, accompanied by Scott Seamer, winning jockey of the 2001 Emirates Melbourne Cup. The
trophy is on a tour of 31 towns and cities across Australia and New Zealand before returning to Flemington for ‘the race
that stops a nation,’ on the first Thursday in November.
From 12 midday Friday, the ANZ Centre’s The Atrium will transform into a catwalk platform where models will showcase
upcoming spring fashion from local boutiques and retailers.
As well as a sneak preview of the upcoming seasons’ fashion, will be the chance to win an exciting prize. The public are
encouraged to take photos with the Cup and upload to Facebook with hashtags #ChristchurchNZ and #EmiratesMelbourneCup,
for the chance to win a trip for two to Flemington to experience the magic, that is the Emirates Melbourne Cup.
“We’re a city that certainly identifies with racing carnivals and the excitement around the Melbourne Cup. The ‘race that
stops a nation’ usually precedes our very own NZ Cup and Show Week which is always a week to remember for the city,”
said Richard Attwood, Major Events Manager, Christchurch NZ.
“Even non-racing fans can appreciate what it means to have the Melbourne Cup in the city, and we would encourage
everyone to come into town on Friday, get in the spring racing mood with a racing fashion parade in the Atrium, and go
into the draw to win an incredible Melbourne Cup day experience for two,” said Mr Attwood.
‘It’s fantastic from our perspective to have one of the most iconic sporting trophies visit us in Christchurch,’ says
Chris Rowe, Marketing Manager of Riccarton Racecourse.
