Mayor opens Hamilton's newest street

Hamilton’s newest street has been officially opened by Mayor Andrew King. The official opening ceremony took place
yesterday at Springside Court in Rototuna and was rounded out with Mayor cutting the ribbon as the crowd of families,
businessmen and investors applauded.
The 15 modern and architecturally designed townhouses situated on the quiet cul-de-sac off New Borman Road were open for
people to walkthrough and view the properties for sale.
“I believe that the success of our city and the people who build our city are the investors, the developers and the
businessmen,” said Mayor Andrew King.
“They’re the ones who risk everything and they’re the ones who build our city. Our job as council is just to enable.
With our rules and the way that we do it, we’ve got to be really open-minded and not actually shut down good development
that our city badly needs,” King said.
Springside Court townhouses were built and developed by Hamilton Master Builders Da-Silva Builders Ltd and designed by
Rototuna-based firm Byrne+Enright Architects. The location is close to the Rototuna shopping centre, supermarkets,
sports parks and playgrounds, as well as several decile 10 primary schools, and the new Rototuna Junior High School and
Senior High School.
“The more of these [properties] that go in, the more people that move out of areas like Nawton and that releases those
houses which are on half sections with a carport and they’re for your first home buyer and you buy those for sort-of
$350,000 and up,” said King.
“That’s the way it all works and everyone cascades up through the system in to your million-dollar houses or your
$900,000 houses and people just move up and it makes those houses at the bottom of the market available for your
first-time home buyers”.
O’Shea said she was delighted with the support of the Mayor, as well as Hamilton East MP David Bennett, Hamilton West MP
Tim Macindoe, deputy mayor Martin Gallagher and Hamilton City councillor James Casson who all attended the opening
ceremony.
“The shortage of affordable housing is such a huge issue for the city and I am very pleased that we have consensus from
all parties in council and government that it is a priority,” O’Shea said.
Hamilton West MP, Tim Macindoe said that developments like Springside Court need to happen more often because “Hamilton
is the city of the future, there’s a huge demand for people to come here”.
“We are trying to build a city, we are trying to cater for the expansion in the population that want to come here. We
haven’t got the money right now for more libraries, more pools and more parks. We’ll do the best we can as we go, but
right now in the growth cycle it’s not enough money to go round basically, so we’ve just got to cater to housing first.
If we can get people in houses, and we can get people on the ladder to own their own homes, that’s the outcome that we
really want,” King said.
Lodge real estate agent Cathy O’Shea, who is marketing the properties and hosted the event, said that it isn’t just
houses that have been created, but a community. “At $650,000 these homes are affordable housing for the North East where
the median house sale in the last quarter for the North East was $677,000,” O’Shea said.
“We now have one house sold, three under offer and two more offers coming in. There is also registered interest in
another. I don't expect they will last long”.
Lodge Real Estate and Priority Home Loans sponsored the event, which included a free sausage sizzle with funds being
donated to New Lives Animal Rescue charity. There was also a $300 raffle basket and giveaways drawn.
The grand opening event included a ‘Tron Rocks’ hunt to entertain the children who dragged their parents around
searching inside and outside the properties for specially painted and hidden rocks which earned them prizes.
