Māori Ward Option - Public meetings

Palmerston North City is exploring ways to ensure Māori values and perspectives are better included in the development of the City.

Around 17% of Palmerston North’s population identify as Māori. Council is considering establishing a Māori ward, an electorate group who will be able to nominate and vote for candidates to a designated Māori seat/s on Council.

If a Māori ward is established, those registered on the Maori roll for national elections will be eligible to vote for Palmerston North City Council Māori Ward candidates.

Submissions on the proposal are now invited until closing date Friday 15 September.

Two public meetings are being held next week on Māori ward options.

They are:

Tuesday 1 August, 12 – 1:30 pm

St Michael’s Church Marae Complex, 70 Ellesmere Crescent, Highbury

Wednesday 2 August, 5 – 7pm

Events Central, Central Library, George Street

Submission forms can be obtained from the Palmerston North City Council Customer Service Centre at 32 The Square, the Central Library, Community Libraries and Council website www.pncc.govt.nz
