Heavy rain hitting Christchurch

Heavy rain is lashing Christchurch but it is not causing any significant problems so far.

The temporary pumps deployed to low-lying areas of the city yesterday have been working since the early hours of this morning and there have been no significant flooding issues.

In the Flockton area water levels in Dudley Creek have not reached the level needed to trigger use of the newly completed bypass.

As is expected there is surface flooding on some roads but there are no weather-related road closures. Roads affected by surface flooding include Avonside Drive, Maces Rd, Waitakariri Drive, and Emmett St.

“We’re in the midst of a complex low pressure system and it is hard to predict how much more rain we’re in for,’’ says Christchurch City Council Land Drainage Manager Keith Davison.

“We’re keeping a very close eye on the situation and have Council staff and contractors out monitoring rivers and streams levels and checking that grates are clear.

“We have contingency plans in place if the situation does worsen.’’
