Another weather event is on its way with rain being the main issue this time. This information is to provide you with an early heads-up to help with planning. SH1 South Kaikoura
Heavy rain is forecast from Friday to Saturday evening. Crew
will work hard to keep the road open, but if there are any
safety concerns due to the weather impact it could be
temporarily closed until deemed safe
again.
If closed, Inland Route 70
will become the detour route (subject to its
availability).

Rain forecast and snow is
possible Friday/Saturday. Staff are on call to keep this
route as resilient and safe as possible.
At this time, snow isn't a significant feature in the
forecast, but please travel with care - particularly on the
higher passes. Weather can change quickly.

additional road work sites currently on this route –
adding up to 45 minutes to the journey. Some of this work
was delayed due to last week’s bad weather so please add
extra time into your journey.
Canterbury
and general
Take extra care
across the region - there is a heavy rain warning for
Christchurch/North Canterbury and the east coast of the
South Island. Surface flooding is likely across the city and
greater ChristchurchFriday/Saturday.
This weekend marks the end of the school holidays so there
will be increased traffic on the roads.
Driving will be treacherous on the network in many parts
over the next 48 hours - reduced visibility through Alpine
Passes and many roads vulnerable to surface flooding and
minor slips.
