Kristina Hill - Floating options: Creative adaptation in cities
This week visiting landscape architect Kristina Hill will speak to an audience in Christchurch about urban resilience in the changing global environment.
How can cities adapt to the challenges and opportunities presented by climate change, flooding, sea level rise and ongoing seismic activity? What new designs and responses might work in a New Zealand context?
Hill is Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture, Environmental Planning and Urban Design at the University of California, Berkeley. She will discuss how the San Francisco Bay Area – a region that, like Christchurch, is challenged by a rising water table in a seismic zone, and post-disaster cities New Orleans and New York have responded to these challenges. She will also describe recent engineering experiments in floating foundations and floating urban blocks used in geologic hazard areas in California.
When: Thursday 20 July, 6:00-7:30pm
Where: The Piano, 156 Armagh Street in Christchurch.
As this is a free event, no reservations are required. We’re happy to keep seats for media, please let us know your requirements by 5pmWednesday 19 July.
