Anglican Church and MBIE to co-host anti-trafficking and exploitation conference
13TH JULY 2017 - Human trafficking and labour exploitation are two of the most significant global human rights issues facing us today.
All countries are affected, including New Zealand.
This two-day conference, to be held at Wellington Cathedral of St Paul, will bring together senior government officials,
business leaders, academics, civil society, faith-based groups, and the interested public to discuss domestic and
international actions we can take to tackle these issues. A strong focus will be on the efforts of the private sector to
combat human trafficking and labour exploitation.
Two keynotes speakers from the UK organisation Unseen will discuss their experiences in shaping UK policies, having had
their work acknowledged as the catalyst for the UK Modern Slavery Act. Business leaders from Nestlé, The Warehouse, and
other influencers in this field will share their experiences on a range of issues.
Co-organiser for the conference, Chris Frazer, comments “Incidents of labour exploitation and people trafficking often
occur hidden within local communities, and involve a range of players including whole industries and individual
businesses, to consumers and people from all walks of life. This conference will give a platform for these wide-ranging
voices to be clearly heard, presenting a real opportunity to work together on ways to effectively disrupt the crime. By
hearing how such criminal activity is occurring we will learn from government and others what steps are already being
taken and then together discussing what further can be done to bring to an end such criminal activity within our
country”.
