Romanian dream comes true for Hawke’s Bay teacher

A decade-long dream of visiting a Romanian orphanage is finally coming true for an early childhood teacher from Hawke’s Bay.

Kaycie Fletcher is travelling all the way from Waipukurau to Târgu Mure, Romania, this week to visit the children being cared for at Orphans Aid International’s Casa Kiwi orphanage.

Kaycie first became aware of the charity when she watched the 2007 documentary ‘Someone Somewhere Loves Me’, which featured Orphans Aid International’s CEO and Founder Sue van Schreven.

“I saw I clip of Sue visiting the orphanage in Romania and it was inspiring,” Kaycie says.

“It stayed in my mind because she was a New Zealander making a difference for babies in Romania. It has been a dream of mine ever since to go to Romania and help orphans in some way. I wanted to visit Casa Kiwi to see it for myself and inspire others in turn.”

Sue says she is delighted that Kaycie has been able to join her for this visit.
“It is wonderful to be able to show a long-time supporter how their support is directly helping abandoned children. There is nothing like seeing the results first hand.

“Plus, Kaycie’s early childhood training is a great tie-in with our Casa Kiwi and foster care programme, as the bulk of the children in our care are in that age group. I am sure she will be a great help to the team while there.”

Sue adds, “I am also looking forward to seeing Kaycie teach the children how to perform with poi!”

Kaycie says the early years are pivotal, and every child needs to know that they are loved.

“What better way to help than to support those on the ground providing children with the love and care they need? Orphans Aid International really does make a difference, especially in the life of a child.”
