Matariki Street Party Offers Fun for the Whole Family
Matariki will come to the Main Street of Ōtaki this Friday, 7 July, with a family-friendly celebration of the Māori New Year kicking off at 6pm.
The event, brought to you by the Ōtaki Promotions Group, is part of districtwide Matariki festivities throughout June and July. The street party will be officially opened with a karakia on the main stage outside the Memorial Hall at 6pm, followed by kapa haka and local musicians.
“We’ll have street performers, Taiko drummers, face painting, a bouncy castle, a merry-go-round and more,” says organiser Debbi Carson. “Main Street food outlets and other stores will also be open.”
The Māoriland Hub will be showing a rolling programme of short films, and will feature a presentation on Matariki.
Main Street will be closed from 5pm until 10pm between Aotaki and Matene Streets for the event.
This event is supported by the Kāpiti Coast District Council.
