Wellington Curtain Bank returns to Taita
Wellington Curtain Bank is returning to Taita to make it easier for the community to get free, lined curtains this
winter.
The Curtain Bank, run by Sustainability Trust, provides free curtains for people with Community Services Cards who need
a hand warming up their homes.
Hutt families can pick up a curtain order form at Great Start Taita between June 12 and 23, drop it back with their
window measurements and then come back to Great Start in to pick up their curtains once the orders are completed.
Last September, Sustainability Trust and Great Start Taita worked together to give people in the Hutt better access to
Wellington Curtain Bank – more than 100 families received one or more pairs of curtains.
Anne from Upper Hutt ordered curtains for her living room last year because her existing curtains had mould on them and
she was very pleased with the result.
“You get warmth as soon as they’re closed, privacy, and it’s just a nicer feeling not having mouldy curtains to look
at.”
She added that the people running the service were friendly and she would “absolutely” recommend other people take up
the offer.
“It’s such a good way to fill the need. People will have money to spend on things like power bills and such like.
There’s no need to live with mouldy curtains or no curtains.”
Curtains are one of the most effective ways to keep heat inside the home, keeping people healthier and their power bills
down.
Richard from Petone also received curtains through Great Start Taita last year: “It’s a lot warmer now and it keeps the
street lights out. It was a friendly and helpful service.”
The curtains are upcycled from curtains and fabric donated by the public, made to measure and lined before they go out
to families.
Any Community Services Card holder can get free curtains from the Curtain Bank between March and November, but it can be
difficult for people not in Wellington city to access the service. The Curtain Bank brings the service to different
communities through the year to extend its reach.
