Para Kore programme aims for Zero Waste on Wellington marae

MEDIA RELEASE: Para Kore programme aims for Zero Waste on Wellington marae
FROM: Para Kore Marae Incorporated
DATE: 19th May 2017 - for immediate release

“I’m very excited to support marae in the Wellington region to tackle waste with the Para Kore programme” says newly appointed waste advisor Te Kawa Robb.

Te Kawa Tangata Robb (Ngāti Awa) grew up on the wild south coast of Te Whanganui-ā-Tara, developing a strong connection to the ocean and the natural environment from his parents and early years at Kōhanga Reo.

“Para Kore, which means Zero Waste in Te Reo Māori, is a waste education programme that has been designed specifically for marae and Māori organisations. Through recycling and composting at the marae, we can ensure that less ends up in landfill.”

“We know that landfills are expensive to operate and are environmentally problematic. Here in Wellington, the pollution of Owhiro Stream over recent months is directly linked to the T&T Landfill. As Māori, we have a strong connection with the whenua, with the awa, with Papatūānuku, and it is important that we look after our environment.”

“Over 175 marae, kōhanga, kura and community groups across Aotearoa have already implemented the Para Kore programme. Now it is our turn in Wellington to jump on the Para Kore Zero Waste waka,” concludes Te Kawa.
