Nelson Grey Power encourages support for local Dairy/Corner Store
Recently two Nelson shopkeepers have been attacked and stolen from.
The owner of the Night Owl Store on Waimea Road was confronted by a knife-wielding man wanting money while another dairy
owner, at the Spot Tahuna Store, was threatened with a tomahawk whilst money was stolen from his till and damage done to
his store.
Many older people are no longer able to drive cars or to access public transport
and have limited mobility so a trip to a supermarket can be a rare occurrence for them.
The corner store is a convenient place for many older people to walk to with walking frames, walking sticks or by
wheelchair or mobility scooters to shop for their milk, bread, and other basic supplies. The social interaction with a
shop assistant known to them can also be an important part of their day.
Nelson Grey Power urges people to continue to support shops in their local neighborhood to be safe and commercially
viable. Aggravated robbery by youths is a serious offence. There is no excuse. Please report promptly to Police any
suspected suspicious behavior around local shops and participate in Neighborhood Watch.
