An update from Hon Amy Adams, MP for Selwyn

An update from Hon Amy Adams
MP for Selwyn

Families with school-aged children will be settling back into the usual routines again this week now that the holidays are over. I hope that everyone is well-rested and ready for the cooler months ahead.

Last week I was fortunate to have the opportunity to travel to Turkey to represent the New Zealand Government at the Anzac Day commemorations at Gallipoli. It was a very moving experience for me. If you would like to read the speech I gave, you can find it here.

Rolleston to have 24 hour police presence

Last month Police Commissioner Mike Bush announced that Rolleston would be one of the 20 towns around New Zealand to receive additional resourcing to guarantee a 24/7 police presence. This is welcome news for Selwyn residents, who will have peace of mind knowing that a police officer will be available at any time of the day or night.

This announcement was part of the Government’s $500 million Safer Communities package, which aims to have 95 per cent of New Zealanders within 25 kilometres of patrolling police 24 hours a day.

As a result of the Government’s investment in policing, 70 additional staff will be allocated to the Canterbury District over the next four years.

New social investment agency to help at-risk New Zealanders

In my role as Minister Responsible for Social Investment, I recently announced that the Government will create a new, stand-alone Social Investment Agency and Social Investment Board to replace the Social Investment Unit currently operating as part of MSD.

The new agency will provide robust advice to Government to help us better understand and meet the needs of our most at-risk New Zealanders and communities. The agency will use data and evidence and focus on measuring outcomes. This will enable us to invest in timely and effective programmes that will achieve the best results for our most vulnerable individuals and families.

Out and about in Selwyn

Shaving the mayor for charity

Last month I participated in Darfield High School’s Shave for a Cure event to support people living with blood cancer. I was given the job of shaving off Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton’s hair as part of this fundraiser.

Well done to Sam, the Darfield High School students and Mr Bell, the school’s Year 13 Dean, for volunteering to sacrifice their hair. The event raised approximately $3,000 for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand.

PM Bill English back in Selwyn

Our Prime Minister Bill English was back in Selwyn in late April for the second consecutive month to attend an event to mark Stage 2 of the Central Plains Water Scheme. While he was here, I joined him on a visit to Fonterra's milk processing plant in Darfield.

Upcoming coffee meetings

Coffee meetings are an opportunity for you to drop in to meet me and discuss any issues that you think I may be able to assist with. Keep an eye on my website for details of the next coffee meetings, which will be in June.

I welcome your thoughts and feedback on all matters so be sure to contact me at selwyn.office@parliament.govt.nz or like my Facebook page and tell me what's on your mind.

Kind regards,

Hon Amy Adams
MP for Selwyn
