Kaikōura District Recovery Plan Launched

Kaikōura District Council Media Release: Kaikōura District Recovery Plan Launched

Recovery Reimagined: Kaikōura District Recovery Plan Launched.

The Kaikōura District Recovery Plan was officially adopted by Kaikōura District Council this week, marking a significant step in the recovery process.

“Reimagine Kaikōura” provides clear direction for restoring and enhancing the Kaikōura District post the November 2016 earthquake. It lays out a community led roadmap for integrating five key themes;

1. Economy - Developing a sustainable economy

2. Rebuild - Rebuilding quality facilities and infrastructure

3. Community - Enabling a strong and healthy community

4. Natural Environment - Protecting and enhancing the natural environment

5. Future - Striving for a resilient and positive future

Kaikōura District Mayor Winston Gray said, “this is a major early step towards rebuilding our communities in a future-focused way, laying the foundations for a post-quake Kaikōura that is strong and successful.”

”Ultimately it is much more than a Recovery Plan. Together, the residents of our District “Re-imagined the Future”. There will be work to do for many years ahead but now we have a solid foundation on which to build.”

Kaikōura District Council CEO, Angela Oosthuizen says, “Kaikōura is now in many ways 'open for business’. Tourists are welcome, recovery work is underway and community support is in place. However recovery is a long road and we have many years of work ahead of us. The Recovery Plan lays out a way to co-ordinate and prioritise our efforts to make sure we’re working cohesively towards what the community wants and needs.”

“To create this plan we bought together all the elements of our communities. Through the process we received nearly 3000 different ideas. It was overwhelming to see so many members of our district not only passionate but positively contributing to the plans creation. The end result is something we can all be proud of and provides aspirations and inspiration for our future.”
