Footpath slip at Stafford Street

Footpath slip at Stafford Street

Thirty metres of footpath along Stafford Street has subsided and been declared unsafe after the Easter weekend’s weather events.

Council have put temporary barriers in place to create an alternative safe pathway for pedestrians to use.

Dave Hadfield, General Manager Tairawhiti Roads, said an old portion of footpath along Riverside Road was undermined.

“We are still uncertain if this was caused by stormwater concentrating at this point or further slumping caused by the river below.

“We ask that pedestrians and road users take extra care and share the space along this stretch of road.”

“Land Development & Exploration engineers are assessing the site to reinstate the footpath. Once a design plan is complete Council will have a better idea of the completion time.”

Eastland Network Ltd will also remove the affected street light.
