11 year old girl escapes to safety

The Women’s Self Defence Network Wāhine Toa congratulates the 11 year old girl in St Heliers who successfully escaped from the man who tried to grab her yesterday. “Her clear and courageous response to this concerning incident is impressive” said Network spokeswoman Alison Broad. “From our understanding of what happened, she did everything right. She broke free from the man, ran to a safe place and told a trusted adult. It appears she was also able to give a clear description of the offender.”

“Through the Girls’ Self Defence Project, we have taught thousands of girls in the Auckland area over the past 10 years. We strongly believe in the importance of women and girls in our communities being taught how to keep safe from violence and abuse” said Ms Broad.

“It is always very concerning to hear of any abductions or attempted abductions of children and it is a deep relief to hear of a child thwarting an attempt” said Ms Broad.

The Women’s Self Defence Network Wāhine Toa plans to extend its work in the Auckland area, and will be training new self defence teachers in 2017. Further information is available on its website www.wsdn.org.nz.
