Feel the love at Wellington Zoo this Valentine’s Day

Get your lion’s share of love at Wellington Zoo this Valentine’s Day

This Valentine’s Day, Wellington Zoo will open its doors after hours for an adults-only evening event. Visitors are invited to take a stroll around the Zoo and head along to special themed talks about the romantic exploits of some of their favourite animals.

“We’re offering an after-hours, adults-only Valentine’s Night experience,” said Amy Hughes, General Manager Community Engagement. “The Zoo will be open until 8.30pm, with live music, Animal Close Encounters, and special animal talks.”

Couples can also book an all-in-one Valentine's Day Package in advance, which includes a delicious hamper and Zoo entry for two. A limited number of Animal Close Encounters will also be available for those who want to treat their loved one to a truly wild night out.

“Our visitors love the special talks – which are a little more risqué for our adult audience,” says Amy. “Valentine’s Night is the only time of the year when the Zoo is for adults only – it’s a chance for the grown-ups to enjoy a picnic and a glass of wine, and learn more about what goes on when the lights go off in the animal kingdom.”

“While the event is mostly about fun, it also gives us the opportunity to share stories about conservation breeding programmes at the Zoo, especially for endangered species like Red Pandas,” says Amy. “And, our Close Encounters give people the opportunity to get even closer to our amazing animals, while supporting our conservation fund to save animals in the wild.”

Local band The Ratbags will perform in Wellington Zoo’s newest area, Meet the Locals He Tuku Aroha. Couples can also learn how to weave flowers from Harakeke flax. Regular Zoo entry prices apply for the evening event, and the Zoo will stay open from 5pm through to 8.30pm.
