Injured tramper retrieved from Tararuas

Life Flight’s Westpac Rescue Helicopter retrieves injured tramper from Tararuas

At approximately 9am this morning Life Flight’s Westpac Rescue Helicopter responded to a call to help an injured female tramper in her 40s at Mitre Flats Hut in the Tararuas.

The tramper was injured last night, but with no cell phone coverage or Personal Locator Beacon (PLB), the group had to wait until morning to send a member of the party to call for help. After two hours of walking, a cell signal was found and the 111 call was placed.

The Life Flight Westpac Rescue Helicopter team was able to land near the hut. The tramper had minor injuries, but serious enough to prevent her from being able to tramp out. She was treated at the scene and flown to Wellington Hospital.

The Life Flight Trust is a charity that provides emergency air services, including the Wellington-based Westpac Rescue Helicopter and a nationwide air ambulance service. It relies on support from the public and from partners such as major sponsor Westpac and major funder NZCT to provide these services. More information atwww.lifeflight.org.nz.
