Inner harbour progress for summer
Beautification of the Inner harbour precinct is set to continue after concept plans were presented to Council at their
December meeting.
The project which is part of the Tairawhiti Navigations project, will see the Inner Harbour transformed into a high
quality environment in line with other prime waterfront destinations around New Zealand.
The first phase of the project will see planting, road resurfacing, and new carpark facilities around the Works and
Soho. A new walkway will provide a connection from the beachfront through the Inner Harbour to Titirangi to form part of
the Tairawhiti Navigations heritage trail. Phase two would see an upgrade of the Marina area to create a vibrant and
attractive pedestrian friendly space.
Mayor, Meng Foon says “before we could commit to any further development of the Inner harbour, we had to be sure that
the infrastructure beneath the surface was in good condition. This work is now complete so the concepts can be further
refined. We are also working with iwi to finalise the stories to be told and how these will take shape.”
There is some minor work to be done in preparation for next year. “We are working with stakeholders to better organise
the boat trailer parking around the boat ramp. As part of the project, dedicated boat trailer parking will be provided
but in the meantime we need to address the current congestion issues.” Said Mr Foon.
Three phoenix palms will also be removed along Crawford Road, outside the Works café.
“We’ve received a number of complaints about the trees attracting pests and dropping seeds and fronds. This is creating
a hazard for several food and drink establishments in the area.” Said Mr Foon. The three palms are set to be removed
before Christmas.
The final design will go to Council early next year for approval with phase one construction expected to commence at the
end of 2017.
