Climate Justice Now Protest
No new mining, drilling or fracking!
When: Wednesday December 14th 12:30pm
Where: Midland Park, Wellington
With the government set to announce new permits to allow even more prospecting for oil and gas Oil Free Wellington is holding a protest outside oil company Statoil's Wellington offices at Midland Park, Wellington.
Similar permits are allowing Statoil and Chevron to conduct seismic blasting off the east coast of Wellington now. The arrival of the seismic blasting ship, the Amazon Warrior, was met by hundreds of protesters on the land and water in Wellington in November.
Oil Free Wellington spokesperson Michelle Ducat says, "We know it's time to leave oil, gas and coal in the ground if we want to avoid catastrophic climate change and protect our environment."
"It's exactly a year on since the Paris climate talks, yet the government continues to roll out the welcome mat to oil companies. It's up to us to make sure these companies know they are not welcome here."
"Communities across Aotearoa and the world are standing up to fossil fuel projects. They are resisting the unjust economic and social systems that are the root cause of the social and economic crises we face - systems that allow oil companies to profit from the destruction of our climate."
An "unwelcoming" banner will be signed by everyone at the protest in opposition to fossil fuel business as usual. "We are determined to achieve a just future and a stable climate," says Ms Ducat.
