61 Molesworth “Deconstruction”: Day 15 Photography by Liana Pantaleo
This morning I walked by the site as usual; it was eerily quiet with very few people around. I could see some workers on the site, but not the usual crew that are around the barrier fences. The building looks maybe about one third demolished at this point.
I spoke to the one worker I could find who was near enough to the barrier. He’s been with the project since the beginning. The first thing I asked was why it was so quiet, and he told me that pressure builds up in the pipes and it needs to be released.
I was told that it took about a week to set up and the crew has been working 7 per week days since. Council said “deconstruction … will start … Thursday 24 November” taking “between 10 days to two weeks to complete” – so it’s day 15 from that point and 11 days since I took my first photo after work appeared to have just begun. I’m still a bit confused.
They are looking at opening the street soon, hopefully sometime next week. Of course, that’s assuming everything moves forward as predicted.
