Solomon Islands earthquake – take care on the water today
Auckland Civil Defence is standing down following the cancellation of a tsunami threat this morning.
The threat was generated by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake near the Solomon Islands this morning.
Auckland CDEM’s Head of Emergency Management Operations, Aaron Davis, says while the threat has been cancelled, people should take care on the water today.
“Some of the currents could be strong and unusual, people should take care on the water.
“Events like these are a good reminder to make sure you know if you live in a tsunamievacuation zone.”
“If you live near the coast and you feel a long, strong earthquake, be gone.
“Don’t wait for a tsunami or for an official warning. Move immediately to higher ground or as far inland as you can. Walk if you can. Stay there until you get the all clear.”
This morning’s event is a timely reminder to:
• Check the tsunami evacuation maps for your area, so you know if you live or work in an evacuation zone.
• If you are in an evacuation zone, think about how you will get to higher ground.
