Community awareness meetings
The Nelson Tasman Civil Defence Emergency Management group is holding a number of public meetings throughout the District over the next couple of weeks starting with Motueka tomorrow night.
The meetings planned in the aftermath of the Kaikoura earthquake last month will explain the current tsunami maps, what people should do, what to expect in the way of a warning and what is the best preparation.
With the large number of comments and phone calls to our office after the November quake it was apparent there is not a common understanding of what people should do and where they can get information from, said Group Controller Roger Ball.
“Each event is different in its magnitude, location and impact, just is how we will experience it on land and at sea. However, there are some general preparedness principles we all need to take on board – such as understanding your local hazards, having a plan, have a get-away kit and supplies, and getting to know your neighbours.
“The best we can do is to be aware of the risks we face as communities and be prepared – that’s what we will be focusing on at these meetings.
“Everyone is welcome to the meetings and we will have staff there to answer as many questions as we can,” said Mr Ball.
