Volunteers needed to spring clean the Melling Line
KiwiRail are looking for volunteers to join staff from KiwiRail and Hutt City Council as they spring clean the Melling Railway Line in Lower Hutt between 9.00am – 2.00pm on Saturday 10 December.
The Great Melling Rail Line Clean Up is a joint initiative between KiwiRail, Hutt City Council and the Growing Places Charitable Trust which aims to beautify the Melling Line by removing graffiti, weeds and rubbish around the tracks. There will also be gardening tasks, for the Hutt’s green fingered residents.
In the morning volunteers will receive a full safety briefing and will be provided with the tools they need to undertake light maintenance work. In the afternoon helpers will be rewarded with a sausage sizzle to thank them for lending their support to the project.
Lower Hutt Mayor Ray Wallace says, “This is a great opportunity to clean up an area which is widely viewed by road and train commuters but not easily accessed. My thanks to all the organisers and volunteers helping to make our city a more beautiful place.”
The clean up was organised by KiwiRail team members Isaac Adams and Inga Abolins- Thompson who found they had a mutual passion for giving something back to the community after attending a Learning Wave course together.
Isaac says he hopes that local residents and businesses owners will come together for the event to help smarten up the line.
‘The clean-up may only take a few hours but the results, and the benefits to the community, will last for a long time to come. By the end of the day we hope to make the rail line a pleasant area that everyone can enjoy.’
