Keep kids reading this summer
HUTT CITY COUNCIL NEWS RELEASE

Keep kids reading this
summer
The Big Read, Hutt City Libraries’ successful reading programme is back this summer, encouraging children across Lower Hutt to get excited about reading, engage with family and friends, and go in the draw to win great prizes.
The free programme provides a fun opportunity for children to retain reading levels, and avoid the learning loss that research has shown can occur over summer. Last year more than 7410 books were read by children signed up to the Big Read.
Children receive a Big Read journal, to record their reading progress. This year the entire family can join in, with our under-5s challenge, Teen Read and the new ‘Explore. Read. Relax’ challenge for adults.
Hutt City Libraries Children and Teens Specialist, Jill Marriott, says “We love the buzz of children and families spending time in our libraries over summer. It’s great to see kids engage with reading outside of school and talking with library staff about what they’re reading.”
Children across the region aged 0-12 years can pre-register online for The Big Read from 1 December or sign-up at any Hutt City Library from 16 December.
The Teen Read and ‘Explore. Read. Relax’ begin on 1 December. Drop in to any Hutt City Library to grab your challenge card.
