Slash immigration to curb house prices
The Democrats for Social Credit Party’s Mt Roskill by-election candidate Andrew Leitch has waded into a debate that the other candidates have steered clear of. He’s calling for the government to slash immigration by at least half for the next 5 years.
In an electorate where 46 percent of residents were born overseas that’s a brave call, but Mr Leitch says many immigrants are being priced out of the housing market and house building needs to catch up with population numbers so that houses become affordable once more.
A meeting of the Party’s campaign team at the weekend was told that the number of people living in cars and converted garages in 5 years time will have doubled if immigration goes un-checked.
Skyrocketing house prices have also caused many families to live in crowded conditions, and forced others into renting when they really wanted to buy their own property.
Auckland’s transport network is already choking and other key infrastructure networks are under serious pressure. Those problems will rapidly get worse if the number of immigrants coming into the country continues at the same rate.
The government is riding the wave of immigration to keep the economy buoyant, but the downside costs of that policy are starting to hit home and it needs to take action now.
