Suspected earthquake damage delays pool opening
The Taumarunui Pool has sprung what is expected to be an earthquake related leak and will now not be able to open as planned this coming Saturday (3 December).
Ruapehu District Council Property Team Leader Rebecca Van Orden said that the pool had been filled and the water being treated in preparation for opening this Saturday when the leak was discovered.
“We have now needed to drain the pool to allow the leak source to be confirmed and repairs to take place,” said Mrs. Van Orden.
“With repair work and allowing time for the sealant to cure we now anticipate that the pool will not be open before Monday 19th December two weeks later than planned.”
“Council believes that the damage is earthquake related.”
“Repair crews will be taking advantage of the pool being empty to check all the seal points for any possible damage.”
“This is very disappointing with the official start of summer being Thursday this week.”
Mrs. Van Orden said that the Ohakune and Raetihi pools open a week later than Taumarunui.”
“The southern pools are being filled at the moment to ascertain that they did not sustain any earthquake damage and are still water tight.”
“All being well they will both open as planned on Saturday 10th December,” she said.
